Il en utilise plus d\u2019une centaine. <i>\u00ab Tels de ces pseudonymes sont pour la parade, dr\u00f4le, glorieuse ou tendre. Et d\u2019autres sont des pseudonymes de fuite, pour se rendre invisible et se soustraire aux g\u00eaneurs. \u00bb<\/i> (Jean Starobinski, L\u2019\u0152il vivant, 1961, Stendhal Pseudonyme.)<\/p>\n<p>Rien \u00e0 voir avec le simple pseudonyme de Voltaire (n\u00e9 Fran\u00e7ois-Marie Arouet et qui ne voulait pas g\u00eaner sa famille par ses propos libertins ou frondeurs), ni m\u00eame George Sand (Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin de Francueil devenue baronne Dudevant) qui prendra un nom d\u2019homme pour semer le trouble quant \u00e0 son identit\u00e9\u2026 et augmenter ses chances d\u2019\u00eatre publi\u00e9e dans un univers de l\u2019\u00e9dition r\u00e9solument masculin.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le cas de Stendhal, les pseudonymes servent \u00e0 se cacher, mais aussi \u00e0 se m\u00e9fier du langage en tant que convention sociale ou d\u00e9sir d\u2019\u00eatre un autre.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00ab Je porterais un masque avec plaisir ; je changerais de nom avec d\u00e9lices (\u2026) Mon souverain plaisir serait de me changer en un long Allemand blond, et de me promener ainsi dans Paris. \u00bb<span id=\"2\" class=\"cit-num\">2<\/span>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h6>Henri BEYLE, dit STENDHAL (1783-1842), Souvenirs d\u2019\u00e9gotisme, posthume, 1892.<\/h6>\n<p>Jean Starobinski (1920-2019) consacre un chapitre aux pseudonymes de Stendhal dans <i>L\u2019\u0152il vivant<\/i> : <i>\u00ab Le d\u00e9sir de para\u00eetre et le d\u00e9sir de dispara\u00eetre font partie en lui d\u2019un m\u00eame complexe. \u00bb\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Pour cet historien des id\u00e9es, th\u00e9oricien de la litt\u00e9rature et m\u00e9decin psychiatre suisse, le pseudonyme<i> \u00ab n\u2019est pas seulement une rupture avec les origines familiales ou sociales : c\u2019est une rupture avec les autres\u2026 (il) permet \u00e0 Stendhal la pluralit\u00e9 des \u2018moi\u2019, qui lui permet de se r\u00e9volter contre une identit\u00e9 impos\u00e9e du dehors. Et puisque le nom est situ\u00e9 symboliquement au confluent de l\u2019existence pour soi et de l\u2019existence pour autrui, le pseudonyme le rend \u00e0 l\u2019intime exclusivement, elle lui offre la possibilit\u00e9 de voir sans \u00eatre vu, fantasme de Stendhal. \u00bb\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, <i>Le Rouge et le Noir<\/i> est un incontournable de la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise. Ce roman d\u2019apprentissage offre une peinture critique de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 contemporaine, l\u2019auteur se situant \u00e0 la charni\u00e8re de deux esth\u00e9tiques litt\u00e9raires : romantisme exacerb\u00e9 et r\u00e9alisme vu par tel ou tel personnage. Autre chef d\u2019\u0153uvre dans l\u2019histoire de la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise et sign\u00e9 Stendhal, <i>La Chartreuse de Parme<\/i> (1839).
